Split Case Pump

A split case pump is a type of centrifugal pump in which the pump’s casing is split into two separate chambers. This type of pump is different from an inline pump or an end suction pump in which the discharge nozzle and the suction nozzle are both included in one chamber.

There are two main types of the split case pump. When the casing is split along a vertical plane with respect to the impeller, it is referred to as a vertical split case pump. When the casing is split along a horizontal plane, it is referred to as a horizontal split case pump.

The later type of casing design is more economical in applications that require significantly higher flows, and its impeller can be supported using bearings on two sides, which is an advantage for larger, higher flow pumps.

The split case pump has both the discharge and suction connections in the lower half of the pump casing, in an opposing configuration to each other.

The pump’s impeller is normally mounted on a shaft that is supported by bearings on two sides.

How it Works

The most common split case pump is a single-stage, between bearing, non-self-priming centrifugal volute pump. The design of the pump allows for easy removal of the pump’s top casing to enable easy access to the pump’s components without interfering with the motor or the piping system.

The independent bearing casing allows for easy maintenance without the need for removing the pump’s top casing. The pump’s double volute design minimizes the radial load on the shaft, increasing component life and reducing vibrations to provide a quiet operation.

The split case pump is available in various designs and manufactured from different materials to suit a wide range of applications. Major components in the pump such as, impellers, casings, wear rings, and shafts can be offered by manufacturers in various materials to suit the fluid hat is being pumped and the site environment conditions.

The pump also comes in a variety of configurations and designs including horizontal, vertical, vertical open shaft and close coupled configurations; with counter clockwise or clockwise rotation design options.
